In the United States the first attempts to restrict carette advertising in broadcast media came under a ‘fairness doctrine’ that required broadcasters to air anti-carette advertising if they wished to carry pro-carette advertising. The Amateur Atetic Foundation’s 1989 study, “Gender Stereotyping in Televised Sports,” received national attention in both the popular media and scholarly publications. And, hundreds of copies of the report have been requested by and distributed to national television networks.

This new study is intended to measure what, if any, progress has been made in the four years following the orinal report. On the positive side, broadcasts of national events such as the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament and the U. Open Tennis Championship communicate a snificantly hher level of respect for women and their accomplishments as atetes. Each M&M is named after their color, and their personalities are as follows: Red is a self-confident leader, Yellow is an oblivious goofball, Orange is neurotic, Blue is cool and smooth, and Green (the female M&M) is a purring seductress (“Characters”).

  • The submission was based on the APS review paper on the psychology of gambling and position statement on gambling-related harm, and was prepared by the National Office Public Interest team with input from contributors to those papers and the National Executive of the APS College of Sport and Exercise Psychologists.
